Infertility Awareness Week 2012: Don’t Ignore the Pain of Infertility

Your best friend calls you to tell you that she’s pregnant with her third baby. And they weren’t even trying. She’s never had any trouble getting pregnant before and this is no exception. On the other end of the line, you’re happy for her but crushed at the same time. Why is so easy for some women and so difficult for others? Why do you have to struggle with infertility?
Sound familiar? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. Infertility is painful. Period. No matter how you approach it, going through infertility will always have its difficult moments. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with the pain that you are going through.

1. Don’t ignore your feelings.

Part of a healthy emotional response is allowing yourself to acknowledge and experience the emotions that come along with a life situation. By acknowledging the pain and allowing yourself to express the feeling, you can then begin dealing with the process of emotional healing. Suppressing your feelings won’t help anyone involved.

2. Don’t ignore your partner.

Remember that your partner is going through this process too. Your partner will have his or her own emotions regarding the process of infertility and it’s important to acknowledge that as well. Talking through your feelings together can help solve and prevent conflict and distance between partners going through infertility treatment.

3. Talk to others.

The decision to talk with your friends and family about your infertility treatment is individualized. If you don’t feel comfortable talking with those around you, consider joining a peer support group. At Texas Fertility Center, we offer a monthly support group to allow patients to come together and talk about their experiences. The support group meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Check our calendar for the next available date.
